Episode Twenty-Four

Ravi and Sonia usher in a one-two combo of colossal DriveTime events: the debut of sleek Studio-V and a new feature called Backseat Driver, an over-the-shoulder POV of the harrowing DriveTime route. Plus DriveTime Cultural Critic Peter Bebergal stops by to deliver a "mysterious package":
- Karl Blau's Beneath the Waves
- Destroyer's Rubies by Destroyer
- Kathryn Davis' The Thin Place

Hi Ravi and Sonia,
I was on the edge of my seat following your drive along the Jamaicaway!
Studio V is looking good.
When your guest showed up in the back seat and the camera was rolling from back there, I thought you might have flipped down the sun visor nad open up the mirror to give us a view of the back seat. ;-)
How fitting steve that you are first out of the gate to comment on the debut of Studio-V... since you're the Lando Calrissian of Studio V!
I like the mirror trick, we'll pull that one out if we engage "Backseat Driver" again.
Ravi,
The backseat cam was fresh and entertaining. Ravi, nice instinct to speed up the video in the dry areas. The front bumper dance was also fun. How about the "Name that hood ornament!" contest for a sweeps production when the backseat cam is in play.
I enjoyed the deadpan chit chat between you and Sonia on the J-way. It seemed like you were 'pulling teeth' to get a response. It reminded me of the early episodes.
R: Is this a rarity for us?
S: No.
R: Lot of traffic right?
S: Correct.
R: We hate the traffic right?
S: We don't love it.
Speaking of the earlier episodes, I realized that this was an episode where Sonia was actually interacting with Peter (and not just digital implant).
Finally, I enjoyed Peter's endless comparative musical descriptions of the artists. I did not get the all. Nevertheless, it was entertaining to hear them used.
Yet another wonderful DriveTime!
Ken
Ravi & Sonia,
Drive Time was great this week. I enjoyed the backseat camera.
I think the funniest part of the show was when you got out and did your dance and then almost lost the car door. How hilarious was that!
Anyway, I did enjoy this episode and look forward to many more.
Drivetime Tabla... very nice.
White knuckle podcasting at it's best. How ever will you beat this..."The Drive Time Bumper Cam"? Vomit bag not included.
I also loved the special video effect accelorator-cam thing but I agree with Ken, Sonia needs somehting a little stronger than fruit juice in the morning.
ken -- like the hood ornament challenge! re: "pulling teeth", it was a cold windy morning and we'd been futzing around with some technical issues before we got rolling -- perhaps that played a factor? For what it's worth -- this episode has been "in the can" for a few weeks (aging like a fine wine). Also, the "real" Sonia and Peter did interact once before, in the tail end of episode 14.
anonymous -- the sad fact was that neither Sonia nor Peter saw that improv "love ya!" moment.
justin tilden -- tablalicious!
jeff -- white knuckle, indeed. The idea of a bumper cam has come up before... hmmm. Sweeps-worthy schtick, you think?
This is a very, very enjoyable podcast that you guys have done. It is the most entertaining and greatest thing I have seen in a long, long time. Thanks to Ravi and Sonia. Keep up the most excellent work.
Ravi:
I would love to know, how many people watch the show every week???
I think it is high time for the first DriveTime citizen's arrest! We need someone to bring order to Boston's anarchic roadways and you two are just what the doctor ordered. Plus you have a video record in case of litigation.
I liked the post-blackout outtake. Can we have an episode that's all outtakes? Outtakes are always the best part of a Jackie Chan film...
How come Peter Bebergal never reviews anything I like, such as "The O.C."? What about us little people?
Finally, I think Studio V might need a new muffler...
Does studio V stand for VAAAAROOOOM.
I don't know? it's been a long time since I've had some thing to say..... I guess I didn't have something to say.
Keep up the swell show.
thanks, thanks vendre! ;-)
okay, for j.d. iles -- all viewers chime in with "here."
stefan -- a new muffler? But that's the "good" car! We'll try to get Bebergal to de-cerebralize it a bit...
good to hear from you barrington! Studio-V's got "denna svenska makten" (aka Varooom!)
I'm just now getting caught up with a couple of back episodes of DriveTime. Great episode! I love Studio V... but what happened to Studio A? Studio A had character.
Studio-A is fine, Melanie. Just getting a brief respite... she'll be back in the next episode!
Seeing the J-Way again reminded me about my first trip to Boston where I got lost and spent about an hour driving back and forth on that road looking for a cross street that didn't seem to exist. (I forgot to tell that story during my guest stint.) Ahh, New England driving...
dashiell -- I'm glad you didn't write, "Seeing the J-Way again reminded me of that awkward moment when you tried to put a paper bag on my head."
For j.d. iles: HERE (every week).
For ravi: I loved the Backseat Driver segment
...even though the right- and left-click features didn't work for me. Must be an issue with my company's firewall.
I also liked the cultural critic segment (as always)...however, you weren't driving! You'll have to change the name to CarTime if you continue parking and talking. I know it's silly, but I really missed the driving. It adds excitement -- like the chance that you'll happen upon a cold-morning-ice-cream-sandwich-eater.
The shot of you outside the car with Sonia oblivous made me laugh out loud.
Next time, I will wear the bag... It's my biggest regret!
Shalom Ravi & Sonia
I enjoy every episode of Drivetime but Backseat Driver was super cool.
Studio V was a smooth ride. It always seems that Studio A is in imminent danger of shaking itself to pieces.
Maybe next time Ravi should invite Sonia to join him at the bumper.
Ravi and Sonia,
I'm new to Drivetime this week. Got to it somehow via RocketBoom, I think. Spending way too much time at work catching up on the episodes.
Studio V is nice, but I miss Studio A's comforting purr. At idle, there's this sort of muffled creaking-plastic rattle sound that only well broken-in European cars seem to make. It just lends this cozy ambience to the show.
Can't wait for Friday and the next post.
-Joe C.
ps. If you ever need a pit stop on the way to NYC, we're less than five min. off I-95 in Conn.
here!
i think the fact that neither Sonia nor Peter saw that improv "love ya!" moment was what made it super funny!
loved the backseat driver segment too. seriously, ice cream in the morning? wha??
I gotta say I also busted out with a good explosive belly laugh when you pointed in from the outside (in Japan, we call that gesture "The Gets"). Totally woke my poor wife up from a nap. Oops.
The Thin Place sounds awesome. I've actually tried writing from a dogs point of view, but it always end up like a chapter full of these one word sentences. That's how I imagine it is to be a dog.
Um... yeah, talk about dark confessionals. As always, a joy. Thank Ravi!
I saw Peter Bebergal on Cambridge Street last week. I recognized him because of this vlog. Does that make him a celebrity?
Oops -- missed some comments here...
[better late than never!]
david, es, goaliegrl29 -- glad you enjoyed backseat driver! I'd forgotten about it and mayhaps we'll resurrect it.
joe c -- was this your first comment? A belated welcome aboard (and good to see you the other day!)
jeshii -- always honored by international commenting!
and pupil -- at least I'm not late in getting back to you. If you feel Peter is a celebrity, he's a celebrity in my book! Did you approach him? He might have revealed the Official DriveTime Handshake to you!
