Episode Twenty

Ravi navigates Studio-A to the auto shop, while Sonia pilots Studio-V behind him. After some worrisome moments apart, they reunite in the welcoming bosom of Studio-A... only to find themselves "Waiting for Mike Zirilli."
Finally -- in a DriveTime first -- Ravi gives up the driver's seat.

Geez Louise! Blogger seems to be having some serious problems tonight -- this entry took forever to post (not the video, the entry itself).
I wanted to make sure that this week's episode got up on Friday... in Australia!
You and Sonia are wonderful. I love how sweet you are to each other all the time.
Not your flashiest, but I really liked this episode. Lots of funny moments, and some firsts -- First out-the-back zoom, first Ravi-as-passenger, ...
You wrote that this was the first time you gave up the driver's seat, but you did have that guest host drive once.
I think you should have plugged Mike [and] the Mechanic's business. You let other guests, so why not him? Everyone's looking for an honest car mechanic, and he seemed great. (Maybe you're keeping him for yourself. Sucks to have to make an appt weeks out.)
I had that illness a couple weeks ago and it was the most annoying thing...
david -- where are you when I'm writing the episode descriptions?! How about "Ravi gives up Studio-A's driver's seat."?
I went back and forth a bit about plugging Mike's business -- Sonia pulled out the URL hand of magic, but alas Arborway Auto doesn't have a website. Mike did give their phone number, but I intentionally left that on the cutting room floor. Seemed akin to putting someone's email address out there. I wouldn't want to get them on some telemarketer/spammer hot list. And I figure anyone who needs a good mechanic (especially for odd cars), can google "Arborway Auto" to contact them. Ask for Mike!
headsoff -- Sonia wound up officially having vertigo. Eek!
Is this the first utterance of the Boston accent on DriveTime?
Great show!
justin -- you know, I was thinking the *exact* same thing (the accent) as I put this together.
ken -- thanks for the analysis! Is the "morning sickness" a Kim Watkins reference -- oh wait, that's contingent upon seeing the Beyond Tomorrow piece (which I confess, I *have* seen, thanks to a generous Aussie...) I felt like my Scotty reference fell flat (I should have overdubbed in some crickets.)
The valet parking idea is interesting... but then the camera would be unprotected... hmmm...
Ravi,
Typos in the first try!
DriveTime is always fresh with unexpected content. It was like getting to meet part of the cast and crew (key grip, etc.) of the DriveTime experience.
DriveTime|TestDrive
I loved that the first thing Mike wanted to do was adjust the unadjustable driver's seat! Sonia did the perfect set up by mentioning this earlier in the episode.
The 'Scotty' reference was very funny too. I was anxiously waiting for Mike to break out the Scottish accent.
Of course, my first thought with Sonia illness was 'morning sickness.' Then she fixed it by mentioning it started the night before.
How about DriveTime|ValetParking in a future episode? A production challenge like that would surely be for a sweeps period.
I noticed the "Scotty" reference tanked in the studio. It was funny out here. I was yelling, "Do Mr. Scott!" and went "Ahhhh!" when the time for the response (cricket time) passed.
Yes, valet parking would be a tough one. That's why I mentioned sweeps. Almost have to go in and out of somewhere in five minutes (hopefully getting a different guy each time).
By the way, with the thick Boston accent, I immediately thought about Tommy and Norm on "This Old House."
DriveTime|This Old Car
ken - you're on fire!
I do have to say I like the look of the '|' character. Much more 21st century than the old, moldy ':'
Let's call it a Creative Commons symbol. Use "|" away!
I can't wait to see the newly repaired seat (assuming he could fix it). Will you show us the results in a future episode?
Hi. I saw you on the beyond tommorrow. My blogs are a bit dull but you have a cool video blogging idea. Good luck! One question? How did you get your quicktime movies to import in to blogger. I'm trying to get a home video on to mine but can't figure out how to insert it in?
melanie -- we'll check out the results on Studio-A in a future episode... assuming there's nothing life-threatening (!)
kwhite -- "How to insert video into a blog"? I've been doing some workshops that address that very question! One great place to start is Freevlog. You can also check out these nice handouts from a session I participated in last night.
Just wanted to tell you how much I like Drive Time. Really good stuff. Was wondering what kind of camera you are using for the video? Thanks again. Keep the Drive alive
All the best
Seth
Hey there Seth -- I use a simple (dare I say pedestrian?) single-chip mini-DV camera manufactured by S**Y (asterisks to be removed upon sponsorship deal).
Oh -- and a wide angle lens.
Part one of this episode could have been called "Waiting for Mike Z"
Ravi: He'll be here.
Sonia: Really, do you think so?
Ravi: Yes.
Sonia: Yes?
Ravi: Yes, I'm sure. Do you think?
Sonia: So he's not coming.
Ravi: No. But we should wait.
Sonia: Is he coming?
Ravi: Five minutes. He'll come.
Sonia: Five minutes? Okay.
Ravi: Or maybe not. But let's wait.
johnny -- imagine that going on and on and on.... that's what's on the cutting room floor!
Arborway Auto - I now have a new mechanic! (becuase i didn't have one at all)
My question is for Ravi.
While a Graduate student at Mass Art, I heard you did some studies on sitcoms, like when the laugh tracks would come in - as a consistency, is that true? I was wondering if you could touch upon your findings or if you did anything creative with those findings.
thanks
SIM undergrad,
jamie o'brien
Mike didn't seem very pleased to be on camera... I like his accent though! XD
hey jamie -- I'd give you the SIM handshake if they'd ever taught it to me. My sitcom-musing blossomed into one of my thesis projects: Three Abreast! -- The Web Friendly Sitcom."
And mention me if you into Arborway (they won't think I'm that crazy then."
Konichiwa jeshii! You know, Mike was on the job and putting his attention to where it was most needed -- the ailing Studio-A!
