Episode Twenty-Three

Ravi and Sonia welcome writer and humorist Christopher Monks to talk about "the incident" generated by his blog utterwonder.com

It's an episode that pulls out all the stops: The DriveTime Glovebox (aka "DriveTime Mailbox"), an Aussie tribute, a minor collision, the return of the Digital Cohost, the emergence of the DriveTime Censoring Board, the return of the DriveTime Reading Room -- and if that weren't enough -- a peek into next week's unprecedented DriveTime Event.

Ravi,

I enjoy so much that you are brave enough to try new things like 'letter blast' delivery. It's even better when this stuff does not work as planned and stays in the show! The peak of entertainment is the photographic evidence of the failed rigging.

I found the Christopher Monks interview to be fascinating. It's an unbelievable story of potential employer snooping around and a complete lack of a sense of humor. That scenario sounds like something that would happen to me. "Sorry Ken, we have seen your comments posted at DriveTime."

Great show Ravi + Sonia!

Careful ken about what you post! I may have to revisit the letter blast idea with some compressed air (no jokes about my blabbing!)

brian -- I'll only bump into things if done in true Mr. Magoo fashion ("Oh excuse me, Mr. Post"

anonymous -- the hats are off, the hair is free!

Hi Ravi,
In addition to your wide exposure from your inclusion on VideoDog, I sent a message to a Jain Family Yahoo group. Thus greater widening your exposure in parts of the Punjab, Ujain, Gujarat, and US of A.

I hope this doesn't overwhelm the servers.

Enjoy the show,
Ted Jain

Maybe a high-speed conveyor belt would shoot the mail.

Awesome idea for a show. I look forward to watching the 'backseat driver' episode, as I've often thought of mounting a camera in a similar fashion for road trips.

tedsox -- we'll sure up the servers for the Jain train. Maybe as a shout out, Sonia will wear her custom-made "Jainiac" t-shirt in a future episode!

hobie -- high speed conveyor belt sounds good. I welcome any blueprints and specs.

Howdy from Australia,

Name is Renee and love drivetime.
If i ever come to the states i would love to be on the show.
Saw it on Beyond tomorrow and now am hooked.

i think in a previous episode i asked the stupid question as to Sonia being your wife but after watching all 23 episodes i soon discovered that she is, laughs.

Just thought i would say shes is goergeous and Ravi your a bit of a looker too. (trust me is it s a good thing).

Anyway take care and keep up the fantastic work.

Wow! Great episode!

...but what do you and Sonia say at the beginning? "Momo" "Oodabarth"?! Is this some sort of Satanic chant to fix the camera focus?

I'm sure it's really some pop culture reference that I should be embarrassed for not getting.

renee -- Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! (waiting for response...) See, we're slowly learning Aussie-speak. Always good to hear from our friends Down Under. I did get a DVD from the friendly folks at Beyond Tomorrow -- I thought they did a great job (and now I finally understand all the buzz in the comments about the "coffee lid"!)

Thanks javabeanrush -- I imagine you're pleased with our new running character, Enna the Coffee Gal?

david -- satanic mutterings indeed. It worked didn't it?! No pop cultural references, just nerdy art/photo references:

Momo (Momo Shinzawa) and Uta Barth are both photographers who have produced work that have a dreamy, "out-of-focus" kind of aesthetic.

Ravi,

Did the driver's seat get fixed? That may be something for an upcoming episode.

oh ken -- the perils of "the cutting room floor" and me never remembering what's made it in an episode and what hasn't (and my perpetual feeling that too much has made it in to any episode.)

maybe we'll have a special "from the vaults" episode that pieces together all of the mysteries left hanging so far...

(notice how I didn't answer your query!)

Ravi,
Great show! I just started watching, am now through Episode 5. I forwarded your website to a fellow co-worker, as he most recently hailed from Boston.
Were your show based here in Indianapolis, you probably would have had an accident by now...people here tend to pull out in front of you when you're less than 20 feet away, & you can forget about looking for people's turn signals...

Hey Ravi and Sonia--
I found your show via Video Dog and I'm so happy I did! I can't wait for the new shows (and to watch the eps I missed)!

If you guys ever think of doing a travel show and want to come to Chicago, I'd love to navigate!

hey david -- as you go through the episodes, see if you can spot any subliminal continuity clues (sun position, number of stalls per episode, etc) Maybe it's all leading up to something!

Welcome aboard claire and glad that the Video Dog led you over here! I saw there was some spirited discussions going on the comment board over there.

We'd love to come to Chicago -- we had a very, very brief trip a few years back and it was wonderful -- maybe we'll do a DriveTime Across America suite of episodes (sponsored by [insert corporation here])!

Good lord! I just went to read the comments at VideoDog... I need to remind myself to comment when I have nice things to say, so that the negative nellies aren't the only ones flapping their gums.

Ravi & Sonia,

Let me just say this was an awesome episode!

I watched this while at work and got several strange looks after almost falling out my chair laughing at the saga of Christopher Monks.

With the increase popularity and media attention to Drive Time, I wonder if Star will hear this? Maybe he will get a moment on "The View". This would be hilarious, but great media attention for Drive Time!

Anyway, great job, great guest, and look forward to more Drive Times.

DriveTime Across America... Awesome!

Man, this is what I get for not watching every week, all the comments seem to cover the bases. BUT, no one mentioned the free ice cream thing. I actually did that when I worked at a coffee shop. This guy from a local jazz radio show I loved came in and I was like, "Your money's no good here!" ;)

Man, that's like the real sign if you are a celebrity. Free food. Damn, that has yet to happen to Rahman and I. ;)

konichiwa jeshii!

No freebies for you and Rahman? That's surprising since you two are out and about so much... What's the Japanese equivalent of indicating hunger? (ie. rubbing tummy with sorrowful face.) Maybe you can slip in some of that when you interview someone in an eating establishment.
