Episode Seven
In a special DriveTime: Weekend Edition, Ravi and Sonia welcome Dennis Crowley from the mobile social networking company Dodgeball -- and travel through time?
Good! Thanks to you playing the 'dumb' guy it was finally clear how it works with these text messages (I'd prefer meeting some total strangers). The only thing you kept hanging in the balance was the question if you have to pay for it, which you probably do. As far as I'm concerned you can give your personal opinion a bit more, like you did in the end, it sort of wraps it all up a little nicer and as our host we all wanna know what you think of it. Another thing are the cuts, they are a little rough - often. Throw in some more 'black', smooth some out by other means, try to do it in questions or remarks (which might mean planning some) and figure out a route through the city where the sun doesn't glare in like that. I'm off to the yearly 'press ball' here in Berlin, I'll tell some more people about you. And by the way, how old are you?
Loved the show and the guest! It was funny that sonia was spotting people she knew from college (or thought she knew) at the start of the show and then the theme of the day turns out to be social networking.
One of your best shows, if not the best. Keep up the great work.
thanks for the feedback on the latest episode. re: smooth cuts -- they're somewhat of a luxury and I'll put them in as a sort of transitional flow... if I can keep the conversation going, I'll do the quick cuts.
actually this episode had a lot less cuts at its first pass, but weighed in at 12 minutes, which I still think is a little lengthy (though maybe "DriveTime: Weekend Edition" can be a bit more ponderous?)
a route through the city that doesn't have solar glare would send me out on a straight trajectory -- driving in Boston is anything but!
I'd like to say that Sonia's acquaintance-spotting was weaved into the episode on purpose but that would detract from your insight. sonia and I are both impressed with your observation! very nice.
love the weekend edition! your guests get better and better. but what about a night time edition? you could even create some atmosphere with these fab battery pack operated ikea holiday lights (http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=16508&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=67487&langId=-1&parentCats=16508*16517*16520).
if i wasn't stranded over here in england i'd mail you some in a heartbeat.
thanks for the ikea tip -- it fits in the DriveTime budget!
daniel -- glad your roommate is set up with dodgeball. when usage soars in coming weeks, maybe we'll see a nice fruit basket courtesy of dennis crowley?
"Another thing are the cuts, they are a little rough - often. Throw in some more 'black', smooth some out by other means,"
Although rough cuts can be annoying beware of using too many tricky fader effects. They can be overdone (think of Tim Allen in the series Home Improvment with the out of control segweys from scene to scene.) These effects date from the early nineties and can still be seen on cheap local used car commercials. Simple cross fades preserve continuity without distracting from your story. btw just so you know this is the only website that I actaully look forward to checking every week. keep it up :)
Text messaging doesn't seem to be very popular over there in the states, is it? In other parts of the world, for example here in Finland, it's a huge success. People use it all the time, some text a lot more than they actually talk on the phone. And no one would ever ask what text messaging is - everyone knows, and uses it all the time.
I read a couple o fyears ago, and I have no idea if it is true, that this has to do with the way cell plans are charged in Scandanavia in particular. Texting was free while regular calls were subject to a large per minute fee so text messaging became very popular very quickly. In my part of the US at least you get so many minutes with your monthly plan that you really have to talk constantly to use them all, plus typing on the little flip phones just sucks...
david, thanks for your input. hmmm... a "Ravi and Sonia" episode? Maybe we go to pick up a guest and we get stood up?!
jonnydock, my hair grows like wild fire -- perhaps I'll have my haircutter on the show. we could do a kind of "jack-knifed tractor trailer traffic trim" segment.
basse, it's true text messaging is not as popular as it was even in Finland and Sweden back in the late 90s, but I think more people are adopting this (and more service providers). so don't take my "dumb guy" persona to stand-in for the nation as a whole!
and yes editengine, i do remember in Sweden at least that it was much cheaper to text (I don't think it was free) than to call. confirmation from any Scandinavians?
Wow, Great show. I love it! For those of us who really are technologically challenged, (ok, that would definately be me.) the "dumb guy" act really works. Thanks for that. I look foward to future episodes.I'm going to tell my friends about you. Don't lose that co-host of yours she's a gem as you are.
As a fellow Mac OS X user, it's obvious to me that you are not dumb with computers. It takes brains to understand the greatness of the Mac versus the fact that it's not the most popular type of computer in the world.
What can I say, I'm trying to space out my drivetime episodes since I just found the site today and already am done with 3 episodes. Addicting. So here's a comment so I don't finish the lot and end up with shakes later.
Again, loving the shows. LA drivetime... hmmm-- it definitely would be interesting. I was in one unknowingly for 1.5 hours-- LA virgin of course.
Nice guest and idea. I think that would send my cell bill through the roof with txt mesg's.
BTW, would you mention what camera you are using? And you must have a wide angle lens on it?

michael,
you get a drivetime "black friday" shout out for being first out of the gate. way to fight off the tryptophan coma enough to check out the episode.
(and thanks for the thumbs up!)

oh -- and I'm 34 years old. (I think...)
peter,

thanks for your input -- and encouragement.

inky circus,

Another great episode. ...but I gotta say, my favorite parts of each episode are the interactions between you and Sonia.
So, I hope that you won't ever skip a week for lack of a guest. An episode with just the two of you would be great.
Keep up the great work!
I really enjoy the show. I also enjoy the "Ravi and Sonia" part of the show. And the various studio names.
I just noticed how much Ravi's hair has grown since Episode One. Go ahead and check it out for yourself. :)
Am I the only fan watching from Alabama? Just wondering...

Cheryl,
Thanks for the feedback -- I'll hold onto that co-host *and* that "dumb guy"!
hi ravi & sonia,
i love the show! it's such a great format, pure genius.
i can't believe that in a car obsessed nation like yours, no one has done this before.
can't wait for the next episode...
Thanks david -- just be glad we're doing this in Boston with a relatively short commute. If we were in LA, DriveTime would be "feature length"!

KUTGW.
R
vent -- there's some episode where we go into the DriveTime glovebox and in response to a query we show our rig and set-up.
And yes -- it is a wide angle lens!
