Waltham artist John Carrera tells Ravi and Sonia about Open Studios in Waltham and offers DriveTime viewers an exclusive discount on art -- and "bloodballs". Plus, a sneak peek at a November Sweeps DriveTime event.

The "fast start" doesn't seem to want to work (again). Hmmm... it's a slippery beast and I'm flummoxed.

I'll take a look again tonight, but the file size is smaller (20 MB), so waiting for the download is hopefully not too painful.

Perhaps it's something on archive.org's end?

Perhaps these should be hosted somewhere else?

My favourite episode so far! The long load time just heightens the anticipation.

LOVE the shot of Johnny as reporter-on-location. But now you've opened up a Carrera's box of phone-in guests. Even Canada is possible! The reliance on a still shot in your vlog is reminiscent of cd as sun-mirror retro-technology. Hilarious.

The trailer for next week's episode is genius. Well edited!

Polly,

A Carrera's box indeed!

Truth be told, we were hoping to have Johnny on the spot (hey now) -- I mean, in person for the segment but he's too enmeshed with his bloodballs and art!

I don't know what's going on with the non-fast start -- I've got an email into archive.org. But thanks for "waiting it out" and priming the pump of anticipation!

Another great episode!

I had already planned on going to the Waltham open studios, but now I've got that 15% discount as extra inspiration. Thanks!

BTW, the Brickbottom open studios (in Somerville) are coming up too -- Nov 19-20. There are so many artists there you may want to go *both* days.

I told Johnny to post this as a clarifying comment, but in case he doesn't:

John Carrera is the only artist offering the 15% discount (and bloodballs).

You can try the pitch to the other artists, but I make no guarantees (and I don't want any fisticuffs breaking out!)

brian,

ever astute with those ears!

i'd like to say it was for dramatic purposes that sonia's chilling final line is in one channel, but the truth of the matter is I was too cheap to buy a stereo clip mike (cue, sponsorship offers!)

Oh, My, I almost forgot the Bloodballs! THanks Ravi, Yes, I am the only one doing the addl. %15 discount!

I thought it was clear from the interview that John Carrera was the only one offering the 15% discount. Sorry if my previous comment made it sound otherwise.

Good to know david.

I spoke with Johnny this morning (he hadn't seen the episode yet) and the possible confusion came up.

But thanks for letting me know that it's clear!

Re-entry in the space shuttle! Ha!

I love the blinker moment!

Dingus? What is a Dingus?

The Waltham/Boston Map with John insert rules!

Steve,

I didn't include Sonia signing so that I didn't have to pay any licensing fees to Paul McCartney!

A dingus? I can't define it, but I know it when I see it!

thanks daniel burns, katwalla and spi!

for what it's worth I reexported episode four as dv stream from final cut, re-encoded and reuploaded.

ugh!

but now it does indeed "fast start"

my goal with episode five: get this to work from the get-go!

I know this is another expense that might not be possible right now, but you might consider using Sorenson Squeeze. It does a great job of compressing video. Looks awesome and keeps the file size low. I use it exclusively, for putting client work on the web.

I export out of Final Cut as full res Quicktime and use Squeeze to encode that to web video, usually Medium sized Progerssive download Quicktime.

Berlin, Germany calling and yes it started straight away but stopped after six seconds because of the low download speed. So I waited (and did something completely different on the net) and then I looked and listened and yeah, it's better with the shorter bits and pauses (and the shuttle re-entry shake and the traffic light .......)
So when's the first total stranger gonna wind up on the passenger seat??? (And don't get out of the car too much!)

The problem could also be with Archive.org's servers... I have experienced slow DL speeds from them many times.

zeeger,

Today, I did the first interview with a "stranger" (ie. someone I hadn't ever met before).

Another DriveTime first!

I'm going to try to get this week's episode up earlier -- on Wednesday perhaps.

(Sorry about my english, I think :/ )

I'll intoduce myself! My name is Martin, I live in sweden; Småland and I'm 17 years old. I just got my iPod video and searched the whole iTunes for a nice and entertaining videopodcast I could see on my new mp3 player. Did'nt find anything funny :( until I found yours!! It's so nice to see you drive to work and have lille "talks" with people!:D I can tell you, you have the best videocast, promiss!

The little "side-movies" are funny to watch, see you visiting styff etc.

Just one thing though, when you have these photo- and artist people on the show, could'nt you like scan some of there photos/pictures and show a (very) quick slideshow, would be funny to see there material in better quality! (Could run while the persone is talking of there stuff)

Funny thing in this episode! :) saw you visited IKEA!! I just happen to live som miles from the first one ever built, the one in sweden; Älmhult (eng: Almhult).

Greetings from Sweden! Hope to see more of you show in the future!

PS. Drive carefully! :) DS

anonymous -- it did? I didn't do anything... curious. I just examined the episode on the Internet Archive and discovered that the URL off of the blog is incorrect (???). I have updated it now and it plays off of the blog. I *don't* get the episode listed off of iTunes, but maybe that will be updated?

Very strange...
